More and more people are choosing sustainable mobility, as evidenced by the largest Swiss car- sharing provider, Mobility. The number of users is rising across the country, but particularly in certain areas. Among the cantons, Zurich ranks as the absolute number one and has just reached a major milestone. Since January, 100,000 people have been using Mobility here. This accounts for about one-third of the total customer base.
"With 900 vehicles, Zurich is the canton with the most Mobility cars, and it is a very important market for us," says Michael Roth Gut, Head of Offer & Infrastructure at Mobility. "As more and more Zurich residents use car-sharing, we are expanding the offering significantly - not just in the city of Zurich, but also in other cities within the canton."
In the city of Zurich, Mobility replaces 8,000 passenger cars. Of course, the love for Mobility in the canton of Zurich is mostly due to the city. Here, around 57,000 users have access to over 500 cars. The average distance to the nearest location is only 250 meters. In addition to the largest location in the canton (Europaallee), there is also the largest location not located at a train station, at Helvetiaplatz. Zurich offers a perfect environment for car-sharing: a dense public transport network and an excellent cycling infrastructure. Those who still need a car from time to time rely on Mobility.
This has concrete positive effects: while one Mobility car replaces an average of 18 passenger cars, the figure is 21 in the city of Zurich. This effectively saves almost 8,000 vehicles and parking spaces. This corresponds to an area of about 100,000 square meters - or six times the size of Sechseläutenplatz.
In every second municipality, Mobility is present. However, the other Zurich municipalities do not need to hide. Indeed, Mobility is represented in almost every second one. Moreover, the place with the most active private users is not the city of Zurich, but rather the small town of Affoltern am Albis, with its five cars. "I am very pleased that Affoltern am Albis leads in car- sharing," says Mayor Eveline Fenner. "It shows that as an energy city, we do not just talk about sustainability, but live it together with our population."
The offer continues to grow. If Switzerland wants to meet its challenges around traffic, space, and the environment, more people need to use car-sharing to bridge the gap between public transport and cars. For this reason, Mobility continues to expand its offering - also in the canton of Zurich. Last year alone, 40 locations were added, and the trend continues in the same direction. Markus Traber, Head of the Office for Mobility of the Canton of Zurich, comments: "Car-sharing is an important component of sustainable and efficient mobility for the canton of Zurich. Offers like those from Mobility complement public transport sensibly, reduce the need for private vehicles, and make an important contribution to relieving traffic, space, and the environment."
