"Sustainability thrives on participation – and indeed outside, where we are on the move. Even on Clean-Up Day, we join forces to make a visible statement against littering," says Heinz Hänni, Environmental Manager of McDonald's Switzerland. "This year, we have once again demonstrated the strength of our commitment – not just for one day, but throughout the entire year."
Strong Commitment at All Levels
The management team under the leadership of Lara Skripitsky supported the initiative on-site in 17 cities – side by side with local franchisees and their teams, guests, and partners. The nationwide clean-up efforts were accompanied by municipalities, representatives of authorities, as well as youth and sports clubs. Swiss Sports Aid also participated with junior talents.
Over 180 McDonald’s Restaurants Involved
Almost all of the over 180 McDonald’s restaurants in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein took part. Long-standing partners such as Bell, Coca-Cola, Eisberg, Frigemo, Fortisa, HAVI Logistics, and Ospelt actively supported McDonald's. Additionally, during the Clean-Up Day weekend or on other days, 26 further McDonald’s clean-up activities took place at a local level – initiated and implemented by all over 40 dedicated franchisees.
Engagement Throughout the Year
The Clean-Up Day is the visible highlight of a commitment maintained throughout the year: Annually, McDonald’s invests about 90,000 working hours in clean-up tours around their locations – even where the litter does not originate from McDonald’s guests. Additionally, teams voluntarily set up extra bins and actively collaborate with municipalities to develop sustainable solutions against littering.
Progress in Packaging
Today, 97 percent of McDonald’s Switzerland service packaging is made from paper and cardboard – almost entirely plastic-free. Since 1991, McDonald's has operated its own recycling system – for example, converting organic kitchen waste into biogas and used frying oil into biodiesel.
Official Partner of IGSU
For many years, McDonald’s has been a partner of the IGSU, the national competence centre against littering. Since 2007, IGSU has raised awareness with informational campaigns, school projects, and the national Clean-Up Day against littering. Thousands of school classes, clubs, and companies participate in this action each year. More information: www.igsu.ch

The success story of McDonald's began in Switzerland in 1976 with the opening of the first restaurant in Geneva. This marked the start of a new era for the Swiss gastronomy.
