This year, the Flüela Pass between Davos and Susch in the canton of Graubünden will, for the first time after the winter closure, be opened only for active – meaning non-motorised – traffic. For all cyclists wishing to traverse the safe Flüela Pass without motorised traffic, there will be an opportunity on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, between 9:00 and 15:00. On this day, the 26-kilometre-long pass can be explored exclusively by bike, inline skates, scooters, or on foot. Please note: Due to the current weather conditions with sunshine and temperatures around freezing, there is a risk of frozen meltwater.
Great Success
On Sunday, 7 June 2026, the next event from 'Freipass Graubünden' will commence at the Lukmanier Pass. Later in the summer, more car-free pass days will follow at the Splügen, Umbrail, and Albula Passes. The car-free pass days are extremely popular with the general public: in 2025, the Lukmanier and Splügen Passes were closed to cars and motorcycles for the first time. 3000 participants took advantage of the car-free Sunday at the Lukmanier, and 7000 people at the Splügen Pass. The two events exceeded the expectations of Pro Velo Graubünden and the local organising committees.
'After the winter closure, the pass road should first belong to active traffic before motorised traffic comes into play – this is what we wish to achieve with the Spring Free-Pass format,' says Kerstin Jerger, Project Manager at Pro Velo Graubünden. The offering underscores Graubünden's tourism orientation. 'Graubünden is patgific, which means leisurely and relaxed. The car-free days at popular alpine crossings perfectly align with this message to our guests,' explains Martin Vincenz, CEO of Graubünden Ferien.
Free Passes for All
'Freipass Graubünden' is an event for grassroots sports and not a racing event. The event serves to offer active traffic the chance to enjoy pass roads free from motorised traffic for a certain period. This way, the passes can be tackled safely, stress-free, and among like-minded people. The broad population is invited – with racing bikes, mountain bikes, e-bikes, rollerblades, as a family with bike trailers, or as hikers.
'Freipass Graubünden' was conceived within the framework of the NRP project graubünden Bike. The project management of the event series lies with Pro Velo Graubünden, with the support of Graubünden Ferien. The organising committees for the individual events include local tourism regions as well as communities and other partners.
