"These days, the red pen is being wielded everywhere in the Federal Palace. This does not bode well for the transport transition and climate protection," says VCS Co-President Jelena Filipovic. "The Climate Fund Initiative helps make cycling and public transport more attractive than motorised individual transport or air travel. The fund secures financing, which is currently insufficient. Furthermore, investment is made in renewable energies. This ensures that enough clean electricity is available for public transport in the long term – a basic requirement for climate-neutral mobility.
For the VCS, three arguments are central for a Yes to the Climate Fund Initiative:
- Transport remains the largest driver of the climate crisis. Only with investments in climate-friendly mobility will the net-zero targets be reached by 2050. - Those seeking supply security must invest in a robust, electrified transport system, rather than continuing to subsidise diesel and petrol dependence. - More investments in public transport and cycling mean less congestion, less noise, and better air quality in towns and villages.
With the Climate Fund Initiative, Switzerland receives an investment boost for climate-friendly mobility: the government and private entities invest annually 0.5– 1% of GDP (around 4–8 billion Swiss francs) in renewable energies, building renovations, and climate- friendly mobility.
