Construction Begins on Modern Travel Terminal for Twerenbold Reisen Group

By the year 2028, an innovative, sustainably designed structure by Strut Architects will be built on the site 'Im Alexander 5' in the northeast of Frauenfeld near the A7 motorway. In addition to a high-comfort travel infrastructure, the new building will also house the new headquarters for the staff of Excellence Cruises – Reisebüro Mittelthurgau, who will relocate from Weinfelden to Frauenfeld.

The groundbreaking infrastructure project of the Twerenbold Reisen Group in Eastern Switzerland is gaining momentum: Excavators are already at work on the site 'Im Alexander 5' in the northeast of Frauenfeld. Yesterday, Wednesday, 27 May 2026, members of the Twerenbold Reisen Group also pitched in: With the groundbreaking ceremony, the family business, together with representatives of the city of Frauenfeld, partners, and invited guests, officially celebrated the start of construction for the flagship project of the Baden travel operator in the Thurgau canton.

Karim Twerenbold, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Twerenbold Reisen Group, emphasized in his speech: “We already have a strong foothold in the region with Excellence Cruises – Reisebüro Mittelthurgau. The travel terminal in Frauenfeld marks a new milestone in our entrepreneurial engagement in Eastern Switzerland. We are convinced of the excellently connected location and are excited to raise the departure comfort for our guests from the region to an entirely new level. At the same time, we are creating attractive workplaces with optimal conditions for our employees.”

The President of Frauenfeld, Claudio Bernold, also expressed his delight at the Twerenbold Reisen Group's project. It definitely represents a gain for Frauenfeld: In addition to new jobs, the Eastern Swiss travel terminal will boost the location's prominence.

Highest Comfort and Quality of Stay

The location 'Im Alexander 5' provides excellent motorway access. The new terminal is directly reachable from Frauenfeld station by bus in eight minutes. A stylishly designed lounge with a café will become an inviting meeting place and rendezvous point for the travel community. The infrastructure includes a bus maintenance depot, 274 parking spaces, and light-filled office spaces with attractive new workplaces for the employees of Excellence Cruises – Reisebüro Mittelthurgau, who are currently located in Weinfelden. “People have been at the center of our family business since the beginning around 1895. Whether employees, customers, or partners, we want to create an environment with the highest quality of stay for everyone,” explains Karim Twerenbold, who leads the company in the fourth generation. “Our offering of bus, music, and bike tours with Twerenbold Reisen, cruises with Excellence Cruises – Reisebüro Mittelthurgau, and hiking holidays with Imbach Reisen will become even more accessible in Eastern Switzerland.” The new building will also include 16 departure platforms and two special departure areas for bike tours, promising maximum comfort and efficiency during operations.

Aesthetic Quality and Innovation Define the New Build

The building will be encased in a shimmering semi-transparent membrane, giving the architecture lightness and elegance and unifying the different building parts and uses. The design is by the Winterthur-based firm Strut Architects. This marks their second high-impact project next to the Sky-Frame headquarters. Karim Twerenbold emphasizes: “The values and focus of Strut Architects align perfectly with the Twerenbold Reisen Group. Their forward-looking buildings represent innovation and sustainability, fully aligning with our corporate philosophy.”

Efficient Resource Management

The futuristic new building in Frauenfeld will be fully heated and cooled by air-to-water heat pumps. Efforts will be made to largely avoid underground construction with concrete, which brings with it high CO2 emissions. The above-ground parking levels are more energy-efficient both in construction and operation, as they rely less on artificial lighting and do not require mechanical ventilation. A large photovoltaic system on the building will generate up to 120,000 kilowatt-hours of solar power annually. The new terminal infrastructure allows for optimised vehicle movements and efficient resource utilization. Rainwater will be collected in a 120 square meter cistern at the terminal, largely covering the water consumption of the bus washing facility.

The Twerenbold Reisen bus fleet already meets high environmental standards and, with an average age of just 3.5 years, is among the most modern and fuel-efficient in Switzerland. The luxury coaches also offer convenient transfers to the company-owned river liners. Eight of the ten ships of Excellence Cruises hold the GreenAward for high environmental standards.

Milestone in Positioning

The project in Frauenfeld marks a milestone in the company’s history. In addition to the headquarters in Baden-Rütihof, the Twerenbold Reisen Group gains an additional hub. “With this, we aim to strengthen our positioning as a leading provider in Swiss tourism,” underscores Karim Twerenbold. The company is also present in Zurich with Vögele Reisen and the Twerenbold Travel Lounge and in Lucerne with Imbach Reisen, currently maintaining a total of nine own travel terminals and departure locations in German-speaking Switzerland.
