Healthcare costs are steadily increasing, which also affects treatment costs for medical care after accidents. In 2025, Suva paid a total of 1.34 billion Swiss francs for medical and therapeutic services, about 6 percent more than the previous year. A severe accident with complex multiple injuries can result in treatment costs of over a million Swiss francs.
However, through active cost management, Suva keeps the cost development under control and protects its insured from unjustified or excessive doctor or hospital bills. A central measure is the consistent monitoring of invoices. This ensures that only correct and justified services are billed at the legally stipulated rate. As a result, Suva was able to save 123 million Swiss francs in treatment costs last year. This amount benefits the insured, as Suva is not profit-oriented and passes on savings and surpluses to its insured in the form of lower premiums.
2.9 Million Invoices Checked—Every Tenth Sent Back for Correction
Of the approximately 2.9 million reviewed doctor and hospital invoices, 297,000 invoices (10.4 percent) contained errors or inaccuracies and were sent back for correction. These include duplicate invoices, incorrectly charged or non-insured services, and invoices for cases already closed. In some instances, services not rendered were also billed.
Michael Widmer, Head of Cost Management at Suva, says: “Consistent invoice control makes a substantial contribution to stabilizing healthcare costs. Without these measures, premiums for Suva-insured businesses would be about three percent higher on average.”
75 Percent of Invoices Automatically Processed
In invoice control, Suva relies on a combination of automated checks and the expertise of its staff. Today, three-quarters of the invoices can be processed automatically. If the system detects an anomaly, the invoice is forwarded to the treatment cost specialists for review. The automated checks are continuously developed. This allows errors to be identified early on, and employees can focus specifically on cases that require in-depth examination.
Close Collaboration with Service Providers
For efficient cost management, Suva closely collaborates with doctors, hospitals, and therapists. Uniform standards, digital processes, and consultation services support service providers in accurate billing.
Michael Widmer emphasizes: “The vast majority of doctors, hospitals, and therapists bill correctly. Invoice control is not about restricting services but ensuring that the right services are billed at the correct price. Payments are made for treatments that are effective, appropriate, and economical and comply with tariff regulations as the law requires.”
Awareness Campaign “Costs Under Control”
With the current campaign “Costs Under Control,” Suva demonstrates how consistent invoice auditing and efficient cost management can help avoid unjustified costs and limit the rise in healthcare costs. The campaign runs until November 20, 2026, on suva.ch and social media.
