30.09.2025, On September 26, 2025, the School of Life Sciences at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland FHNW awarded 146 Bachelor degrees. The consistently high number of graduates underscores the relevance and quality of education in the life sciences; seven graduates were honoured for exceptional achievements.

Graduates Take Responsibility in Challenging Times

Today, it is of crucial importance that newly trained professionals use their knowledge, education, and ability to think critically and develop solutions to ensure our society remains strong, resilient, and confident, even in difficult times.

"In a rapidly changing world, where geopolitical tensions are increasing, democracies are under pressure, and science itself is occasionally influenced by political interests, resilience is more important and necessary than ever," emphasised Prof. Dr Falko Schlottig, Director of the School of Life Sciences at FHNW, in this year's opening speech at the Bachelor graduation ceremony.

Practice-Oriented Bachelor's Programme with Excellent Quality of Education

Eight specialised study tracks within the Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences at FHNW allow for targeted specialisation at the intersection of nature, technology, medicine, and the environment, with a disproportionately large part of the thesis work conducted in collaboration with national and international industry partners - a clear indication of the close connection between theory and a practice-oriented education. In life sciences, this close connection is particularly evident: students work on practical projects at the interface of research and application from the very beginning - from preventive and therapeutic approaches to the development of pharmaceuticals and medical technologies, to innovative production processes, digitisation in the life sciences, and sustainable environmental technologies. Good partnerships with industry ensure that thesis work addresses current challenges and thus makes a direct contribution to innovation and socially relevant solutions.

This focus on practice makes the degree programme particularly attractive and paves the way for a successful entry into the profession. At the FHNW Campus Muttenz, students benefit from ideal conditions for high-level scientific training and are optimally prepared for the demands of the job market.

"Well-educated young people are the future of our region, and I am fully committed to ensuring that our education system continues to be the driving force for a diverse, social, and successful economic region of Basel," noted Mustafa Atici, member of the Basel government, in his opening address at the graduation ceremony.

The graduation ceremony followed by a reception took place this year at uptown Basel in Arlesheim, the international competence center for Industry 4.0.
