22.04.2026, The new construction project for Luzerner Kantonsspital (LUKS) Sursee reaches an important milestone: From 20 April to 30 June 2026, the planning instruments for rezoning and the development plan at the new site 'Schwyzermatt' in the municipality of Schenkon will be publicly available for participation. The public and other interested parties are warmly invited to inform themselves and actively contribute suggestions.

Medical care today requires different demands than fifty years ago. The hospital building in Sursee from 1976 increasingly no longer meets these requirements. Rising patient numbers, an ageing population, new medical treatment methods, and a shortage of skilled workers necessitate efficient, flexible structures. The planned new building on the 'Schwyzermatt' site in the municipality of Schenkon enables LUKS to continue to align healthcare in the growth region around Lake Sempach with the needs of the population in a local, sustainable way.

Public Participation and Information Event
For the realisation of the hospital construction, the rezoning of the plot and the enactment of a development plan are required. The relevant planning instruments will be publicly available on the municipality of Schenkon's website during the participation period from 20 April 2026. Suggestions and comments can be submitted in writing to the building office of the municipality of Schenkon by 30 June 2026 at the latest. Objections are not possible within the scope of participation. A public information event will be held to inform the public:

Wednesday, 13 May 2026, at 6:00 p.m. in the Schenkon Community Centre. No registration is required. The corresponding planning instruments will be presented at the event. In addition, the mayor Marcel Häberli and government councillor Reto Wyss will provide a political assessment of the project. Dr. med. Martin Nufer, Chairman of the Board of Directors of LUKS Group, will highlight the necessity of a new hospital in the region. The event will be moderated by Marion Gredig, editor of the Surseer Woche.

Location and Project Status
The 'Schwyzermatt' site in the municipality of Schenkon was determined to be the most suitable location based on a comprehensive evaluation. It is well connected in terms of transport and offers optimal conditions for emergency services, public transport, and slow traffic. The project 'Feld und Flur' emerged as the winner from a two-stage architectural competition. The design impresses with high functionality, clear architectural language, and sustainable and flexible construction. Based on this, the master plan was developed by the end of November 2025 in close cooperation with the municipality of Schenkon, cantonal authorities, and a committee of the competition jury.

Next Steps
The public disclosure of the planning instruments is scheduled for November 2026. The Schenkon population will decide on the rezoning and the development plan. The decision on the rezoning will be made in April 2027 at an extraordinary municipal assembly. The municipal ballot on the development plan is planned for June 2027. After that, the preliminary project for the new building can be started.
