In June, not only do temperatures typically rise, but so do the hours of sunshine. Data from Meteo Swiss shows that most regions of Switzerland now have more sunshine hours measured than in previous decades. More sunshine hours mean that UV radiation reaches the Earth's surface unhindered for longer periods. It's all the more important to effectively protect our skin from UV rays.
Over the years, skin damage from UV radiation accumulates and cannot be reversed. In Switzerland, the skin cancer rate is higher than in many other countries. Each year, 1900 men and 1600 women are diagnosed with black skin cancer (melanoma), a total of 3500 people in Switzerland. "The topic of sun protection is important: Those who properly protect their skin can reduce their risk of skin cancer," says Joëlle Jufer, prevention specialist at the Cancer League Switzerland.
How can one enjoy the sun while also protecting the skin? It's best to seek shade between 11 am and 3 pm, when UV radiation is strongest. Shade is the best sun protection. Clothing comes in second place. "Body areas covered by clothes remain constantly protected throughout the day. Good protection comes from a T-shirt that covers the shoulders, a hat with a wide brim that protects the forehead, nose, ears, and neck, as well as sunglasses. For small children, we recommend UV protection clothing," explains Joëlle Jufer. As for sunscreen, apply generously to uncovered body parts with a minimum SPF of 30 and a UVA symbol as a supplementary measure.
The most important sun protection tips:
With these three tips, you can protect yourself most effectively:
1. Shade is the best sun protection - avoid direct sunlight between 11 am and 3 pm.
2. Wear clothes, a hat, and sunglasses - protect the skin more reliably than sunscreen.
3. Apply sunscreens regularly and sufficiently - with at least SPF 30 and a UVA symbol.
