26.02.2026, The planned wind farm development at Flumserberg will not be pursued further. Data from over a year of wind measurements have shown that the wind potential at the proposed site falls short of the requirements for economically viable operation. Based on these results, Axpo is unfortunately compelled to terminate the project. Axpo will focus on several other sites, such as Wil SG (Boxloo), where a wind measurement mast will be erected in the coming weeks.

As is common with wind power projects, extensive wind measurements were conducted over a year at Flumserberg and compared with long-term reference data. Unfortunately, the results show that the wind potential is below the threshold required for economic electricity production. Even under optimistic assumptions, no sufficient energy yield can be achieved at the site. Based on these results, Axpo is unfortunately compelled to terminate the project.

Systematically Assess, Honestly Evaluate Axpo only realises wind energy projects where central prerequisites are met: economic viability, environmental compatibility, and meaningful integration into the region. Cédric Aubert, Head of Wind Portfolio Switzerland at Axpo, says: 'Unfortunately, at Flumserberg, one of these prerequisites is not met – and therefore we are stopping. This is Axpo’s commitment: to systematically assess, honestly evaluate, and take responsibility. This decision is uncomfortable, but it shows that we adhere to our principles,' says Aubert. 'It is a pity for the many people on site who accompanied the project with great expectations and looked forward to the wind farm. We would like to thank all these people for their support.'

Wind Energy Remains Strategically Important Despite the termination of the project at Flumserberg, wind energy remains a central pillar of Switzerland’s energy future – especially for winter electricity supply. There are numerous sites in Switzerland with high potential. Existing installations such as Lutersarni (LU) demonstrate that wind energy can be successfully utilised long-term under suitable conditions and sometimes even exceeds expectations over the years.

Axpo is currently evaluating several sites in parallel. These include projects at Dreibündenstein GR, Waldkirch/Andwil SG (Tannenberg), and Wil SG (Boxloo). In Wil, a wind measurement mast will be erected in the coming weeks.

Axpo will continue to develop these projects with the same diligence that shaped the decision at Flumserberg: fact-based, transparent, and responsible.
