17.03.2026, The UN has declared 2026 the International Year of Female Farmers. To mark this, the Agricultural Information Service LID has conceived the special exhibition 'Women in Agriculture: Yesterday – Today – Tomorrow' at Ballenberg in collaboration with the Swiss Farmers' and Countrywomen's Association SBLV and the Ballenberg Open-Air Museum.

The exhibition puts women in agriculture at the centre: Who are the women shaping our farms and food supply - often far from the public eye? It spotlights them with authentic portraits, offering insights into their daily lives and work. Always in view: past, present, and future.

We cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition 'Women in Agriculture: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow'.

The speakers and organisers are available for questions and discussions afterwards. The event will be bilingual (DE, FR) without simultaneous translation. You will receive free admission to the Ballenberg Open-Air Museum. Please register at the ticket office.

Ballenberg, Open-Air Museum of Switzerland

More than 100 residential and agricultural buildings from all over Switzerland can be discovered and admired at the Ballenberg Open-Air Museum. The stately farmhouses, the humble buildings of the day laborers, the alpine settlements, or the barns, sheds, granaries, washing houses, and drying ovens serve as architectural and social historical witnesses of everyday life and rural culture of past times.

The historical buildings could not be preserved at their original locations and were therefore carefully dismantled and rebuilt on the 66-hectare museum site. Kitchens, chambers, and living rooms offer insights into the everyday rural life in Switzerland.

The representatives of the different regional house types of Switzerland form only part of the Ballenberg Open-Air Museum. Farm gardens, fields, pastures, and meadows, laid out based on historical models, surround the farmsteads. In the buildings, artisans can be found using old tools and equipment to perform traditional tasks.

Various thematic exhibitions provide a glimpse behind the scenes of rural everyday life. And the over 250 farm animals – the entire range of native domestic livestock – bring Ballenberg to life in an impressive way!
