Right-Sizing at the Expense of Employees
The company states it is cutting jobs worldwide with the aim of optimising investments, adjusting business models and relocating to countries with lower costs. Swiss Employees sharply criticise these 'Right-Sizing Measures' planned by Nokia:
1. Investments are thought of one-sidedly as financial metrics here, not as investments in people, qualifications and job security.
2. Anyone who truly wants to invest 'optimally' strengthens competencies, training and good work, instead of cutting experienced employees.
3. The centralisation of functions in countries with lower costs means concretely that value creation and skilled jobs are being withdrawn from high-wage countries, and employees here bear the risk.
Perspectives Instead of 'Clear-Cutting'
Swiss Employees demand socially acceptable solutions to cushion the effects of the layoffs and to give the affected employees new perspectives. This also includes attractive regulations for early retirement.
'When planning restructurings at a European level, responsibility must also be taken at a European level. We expect solutions that protect people, not just optimise numbers,' says Tanja Riepshoff, lawyer at Swiss Employees.
The Employee Association Swiss Employees Demands:
- Examination of alternative and innovative measures to avoid layoffs based on the principle of 'Work over Money' as the most crucial measure.
- For unavoidable job losses: implementation of a binding social plan, including professional support for reorientation (outplacement, coaching, training).
- Transparent information and early dialogue with employees and employee representatives.
Swiss Employees expect management to start talks with social partners promptly. The association is also ready to conduct constructive negotiations, with a clear goal: to avoid layoffs and ensure fair solutions for all affected.
