The limited demand during the nighttime operating hours at Sonnenhof Hospital Emergency Department, averaging 1.3 patient contacts per night, and the ongoing shortage of qualified professionals in the healthcare sector are the reasons for reducing the emergency operating hours.
The changes will take effect as of Sunday, 1 March 2026.
The Emergency Department at Sonnenhof Hospital will no longer operate at night between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM. Instead, emergency services and private individuals will be directed to the emergency department at Lindenhof Hospital at night. After initial treatment at the Lindenhof emergency centre, and possibly an overnight stay in the new diagnostic observation unit at Lindenhof Hospital, patients will be triaged according to defined criteria and admitted to either Sonnenhof or Lindenhof Hospital as appropriate.
Management is convinced that these adjustments will ensure emergency care for the population of Bern with sustainable and high-quality treatment.
