Since May 2023, KSW has been offering midwife-led births. The care model is oriented towards natural processes: It emphasizes self-determination and low-intervention births. If everything goes according to plan, the family is attended to exclusively by midwives during childbirth. However, doctors are always available: Should complications arise, they are immediately on hand. Even in such cases, the midwife remains by the side of the expectant mother and the family.
Audit Confirms High Quality
The recognition with the maximum score attests to the quality of the offering. This is a strong signal, according to Dr. Leila Sultan-Beyer, Chief Physician and Head of the Maternity Clinic at KSW: 'The maximum score confirms the high competence of our midwives.' For SHV recognition, smooth processes, high-quality standards, and clear admission criteria must be demonstrated. However, in the maternity clinic, expertise is not the only priority. 'We treat expectant mothers with respect. Midwives, doctors, and nurses work together to enable them to have a self-determined birth.'
Pleased with the achieved maximum score (from left to right): Remzije Hyseni-Mustafi, Violetta Marien, Nicole Gutmann, Anne Steiner, Petra Graf, Romana Vogler, Chief Physician Dr. Leila Sultan-Beyer, and Tara Weingart.
Best Care for All
Last year, more than 120 women opted for a midwife-led birth at KSW. The maternity care offering is open to healthy women with an uncomplicated pregnancy. Expecting parents often consider where and under what circumstances to give birth, notes midwifery expert Romana Vogler: 'If parents are interested in a midwife-led birth, the accreditation by SHV can aid in their decision-making.' At KSW, however, choosing one birth model over another does not mean more or less support, as Romana Vogler emphasizes: 'All families have a midwife by their side and all women receive the same postnatal care.'
