The national Swiss Animal Protection umbrella organization was founded in 1861 under the name 'Swiss Central Association for the Protection of Animals'. This outdated name was changed to Swiss Animal Protection STS in 1980.
Today, the STS includes 71 Swiss animal protection organizations and the Liechtenstein Animal Protection Association. Its highest governing body is the delegates' assembly of its sections. It is led by a central board of 13 members, divided into nine departments: specialist area, finances, legal services, politics, communication, sections, personnel, international, and youth.
The STS is active nationwide in all areas of animal protection at technical, political, and legislative levels. The sections of the STS ensure the basic work of animal protection in all cantons of Switzerland through their animal shelters, animal care, and rescue stations.
