After more than two decades of intensive and reliable operation in the demanding terminal environment, two Liebherr container cranes in the Port of Casablanca were decommissioned under controlled conditions. For the complex dismantling of the large equipment, Somalev used two powerful Liebherr telescopic cranes, an LTM 1400-7.1 and an LTM 1250/1. Both machines were chosen for their high load capacities, flexibility, and suitability for the confined port areas. They enabled the step-by-step deconstruction of large components such as boom parts, machine house, and portal elements. Somalev deliberately chose telescopic cranes over lattice boom cranes – an approach that allowed flexible adaptation to varying load situations and limited installation spaces.
Technical and Operational Challenges The project was characterised by a multitude of technical and organisational challenges. Age-related changes to the cranes required conservative load assumptions and the use of appropriately sized rigging equipment. All work had to take place in an active terminal environment with only limited areas available for dismantling. At the same time, clearly defined restricted zones and continuous coordination with port authorities and terminal operations were required to ensure a safe and smooth process.
Flexible Solutions and Highest Safety Standards The dismantling itself was particularly complex, as the deconstruction had to be carried out in the reverse order of the original assembly. The various load scenarios required different crane configurations and adjusted rigging equipment. In several project phases, synchronous lifting operations between the LTM 1400-7.1 and the LTM 1250/1 were also necessary, requiring exact planning, precise communication, and real-time coordination.
In terms of safety, Somalev set high standards. The company conducted project-specific risk assessments of damaged components, implemented redundant rigging systems, defined controlled access areas, and continuously monitored wind and crane parameters. In parallel, the team relied on a flexible execution methodology to respond to unexpected structural findings. Optimised crane configurations helped minimise the required space and keep disturbances to port operations as low as possible.
Thanks to the proven reliability of the Liebherr cranes – even after many years of intensive use – and precise project planning, the demanding dismantling was successfully completed.
