Helvetas elected Robert Mardini to its board during the general assembly on June 18, 2026. Currently the Director of Geneva University Hospitals, he led the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) from 2020 to 2024, overseeing humanitarian missions in over 100 countries.
Robert Mardini brings nearly 30 years of experience in humanitarian aid and international work. His career began as a hydraulic engineer with the ICRC. "Helvetas stands for expert-driven and close collaboration with local populations, authorities, and businesses, as well as for political and religious independence," he says. "In an increasingly polarized world, this independence is crucial for supporting individuals effectively and credibly."
Bridge between Emergency Aid and Long-term Development
On the board, Robert Mardini aims to further advance the integration of emergency humanitarian aid and developmental cooperation. "Crises are becoming more frequent and compounding each other. It's not enough to respond only to immediate emergencies; the key is to strengthen people and local systems long-term. This includes investments in water supply, agriculture, education, and health."
Helvetas operates as a Swiss organisation for development cooperation and humanitarian aid in 35 countries, striving for better living conditions in areas such as water, agriculture, education, women's empowerment, economic development, and participation.
Noticeable Impact of the Iran Conflict
Robert Mardini warns of the often underestimated global effects of the Iran conflict. Even though the Strait of Hormuz has reopened, the repercussions of the conflict are already evident: "Major crises hit those hardest who are already poor and vulnerable." The increase in energy and transportation costs, coupled with disrupted supply chains, has severe impacts, especially for people in poorer regions of Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and parts of Latin America. Even moderately increased prices can have devastating effects there: People harvest less, suffer from rising food costs—and even basic needs become unaffordable for many.
Helvetas is prepared to respond to these developments and to provide targeted support to particularly affected communities if needed.
