In total, approximately 6.01 billion litres of road traffic fuels were circulated last year, showing a slight decrease from 2024 (6.06 billion litres). There was a slight increase of 0.3 percent in petrol sales, while diesel saw a decrease of 1.9 percent. Overall, this indicates a stable situation for road fuels. "We attribute the consistently high level of fuel sales to the ever-growing mobility needs of the population," said Avenergy CEO Roland Bilang.
Biofuel sales continued to rise, albeit to a lesser extent compared to the previous year. Notably, sales of biogenic diesel developed positively, with an increase of 8.1 percent. This is partly due to the growing availability of HVO (hydrogenated oils from plant waste). Bioethanol sales increased by 1.3 percent. Thus, the importance of biofuels as a tool to reduce CO2 emissions continues to grow.
Another increase in aviation fuel
For the fourth year in a row, sales of aviation fuel have increased. In 2025, 2.32 billion litres of aviation fuels were circulated in Switzerland, a 3 percent increase compared to 2024. Sales of biogenic or synthetic aviation fuels (sustainable aviation fuels, "SAF") increased from 1.2 million litres in the previous year to almost 1.5 million litres, amounting to just under half a per mille of total sales. "Given this, it remains uncertain whether the targets for blending renewable aviation fuels can be met this year," Bilang concluded. As of January 1, 2026, Switzerland will adopt the EU regulation requiring at least 2 percent SAF to be blended with aviation fuel.
Decrease in heating oil within a statistically negligible range
Heating oil remains the most significant energy source in the building sector. In 2025, almost 2.3 billion litres of heating oil were sold, practically the same amount as the previous year. However, it should be noted that the presented figures are not weather-adjusted: The year 2025 was colder than 2024, with 3015 heating degree days compared to 2859, affecting heating oil sales. Nevertheless, it appears that the long-standing decline in heating oil sales has further slowed down. Swissoil CEO Ueli Bamert states: "The low-hanging fruits have been picked in recent years regarding the replacement of oil heating with renewable heating systems. Now it shows: Many homeowners who do not have the necessary financial means for energy renovations, or whose buildings do not meet the technical requirements for a heat pump installation, stay with oil heating as long as possible." Bioheating oil could not yet gain a foothold; its sales in 2025 were only 74,000 litres (2024: 62,000 litres).

Avenergy Suisse represents the interests of importers of liquid fuels. The members of Avenergy Suisse ensure the security of supply with the country's most important energy carriers: liquid fuels.
Fuels are high-quality products. Avenergy Suisse ensures that this quality is guaranteed in every case, as modern car engines and heaters perform at their best only with flawless energy. High quality standards apply not only to conventional petroleum products but also to renewable energies, such as biofuels.
Members of Avenergy Suisse supply energy for almost every single vehicle on our roads today, as only a few cars have no petrol tank and run solely on battery power. This is unlikely to change significantly in the near future.
Members of Avenergy Suisse handle the import of energy carriers and organize their storage and distribution in the market. They maintain strategic reserves of fuels to ensure that households and the economy never run out of energy, even in the event of supply shortages.
