During space missions, unlimited clothing cannot be brought along. Therefore, Schulthess Maschinen AG has been tasked with developing a washing solution for space. This challenge has been successfully met by the Swiss traditional company.
Zero-Gravity Technology – Swiss Engineering in Orbit
For laundry washing to work in zero gravity, Schulthess relies on an entirely new system:
Gravitational Core Stabilizes Drum: The drum floats freely inside the machine without the traditional bearings.
Cleaning with Steam Instead of Water: Instead of water, a finely dosed steam is used, which evenly penetrates the laundry and remains controlled within the system.
Precise Detergent Capsules: 'Zero-H2O' capsules only dissolve in microgravity and ensure optimal dosing with minimal weight.
Spin Cycle Replacement Using Vacuum: After the washing phase, targeted negative pressure is created through integrated micro-vacuum channels, which directly draws moisture from the textile fibers.
Ultra-light Carbon Housings and Materials: These are fundamental to allow such a heavy device to be taken into space.
The first prototypes have already been tested in a specially converted clean room in Switzerland. Starting today, tests will follow under real zero-gravity conditions.
Why Laundry Care on Space Stations is Crucial
On long missions in space, every gram of weight and every liter of water counts. A laundry solution in space reduces transport weight, improves hygiene, and ensures greater comfort and well-being for the crew.
SpaceWash SX1 – Ready for New Horizons
With SpaceWash SX1, Schulthess demonstrates how far Swiss innovation can go. Precision, technology, and pioneering spirit combine to create a solution that brings laundry care into space for the first time.
