26.01.2026, This summer, the Bethlehem Children's Hospital will inaugurate its new day surgery unit. The project is supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), along with many private donations from Switzerland and Europe. SDC Director Patricia Danzi observed the construction progress on site today.

In the West Bank, there is currently no independent paediatric surgical care. The only hospital in Palestine specialising in paediatrics fills this gap by establishing a modern day surgery unit. Starting early summer 2026, the Bethlehem Children's Hospital will perform planned outpatient surgeries on site.

The project, co-financed by the SDC, targets children from the southern West Bank. The potential target group includes approximately 400,000 boys and girls. In the initial phase, it is expected that around 20 percent of all paediatric surgeries in the West Bank will be performed at the Bethlehem Children's Hospital.

During her visit, Patricia Danzi stated: 'We are very pleased to personally witness the progress of the day surgery project at the Bethlehem Children's Hospital. It will benefit Palestinian children and sustainably promote their well-being.' The SDC's contribution supports among other things the construction costs, equipment, and the specialised training of the staff.

The Bethlehem Children's Hospital is the oldest Swiss aid project in Palestine. For over 70 years, it has provided targeted medical assistance and treated approximately 40,000 children last year. Thanks to long-standing solidarity from Switzerland and Europe, the hospital can continuously develop and expand its services.
