Where concrete was once produced, space for movement, efficiency, and new paths in logistics is being created today. The Pestalozzi Group is constructing a logistics centre approximately 100 metres long, over 30 metres wide, and 12 metres high on the former site of the Kopp company in the western industrial area of Pieterlen. It is specifically tailored to the needs of Transstahl, which specialises in transporting long and bulky goods for its clients throughout Switzerland.
The careful project development began in 2023 with the signing of the purchase agreement, followed by a feasibility study, initial project planning, and building permit in autumn 2024. Following approval by the board of directors in autumn 2025, the realisation phase has now begun. The roof topping-out ceremony for the new build is planned for 2026.
**Festive Groundbreaking with Representatives from Business and Politics**
The ceremonial groundbreaking marks the beginning of a new era in the development of the Pieterlen site. Along with representatives from Transstahl and Pestalozzi Group, Pieterlen's Mayor Beat Rüfli, Simon Enderli, Head of Site Promotion for the Canton of Bern, as well as other project partners and guests from politics, business, and the neighbourhood participated in the event. To ceremonially start the construction, a crane lowered a water supply pipe into the ground, which was symbolically covered with earth by the attendees. This contains various 'time witnesses' from the present — mementos from Pestalozzi, Transstahl, and the community of Pieterlen — to be embedded in the staircase foundation as a symbol of connection, permanence, and cooperation.
'With this groundbreaking, we are investing in the development of our group and clearly committing to the Swiss workplace and to cooperative collaboration with communities and regions,' says Matthias Pestalozzi, owner and delegate of the board of directors of the Pestalozzi Group. Philipp Vassalli, Managing Director of Transstahl, also emphasises the importance of the new location: 'With the new logistics centre, we are specifically expanding our capacities and creating the basis to be able to offer even more comprehensive logistic services to existing and new customers in the future. The project represents an important step in the long-term development of our logistics structure and enables further growth in our strategic business areas.'
**Self-sufficiency and Sustainability in Focus**
A significant part of the materials used comes from the Pestalozzi Group's own range — from façades and roofs to gates as well as door and window systems up to components for heating and ventilation technology. The project impressively demonstrates the competence and interplay of the Business Units in Steel Technology, Building Technology and Building Envelopes.
When it comes to sustainability, Pestalozzi is future-oriented: planned are an energy-efficient heating system, a photovoltaic system, charging stations for electric trucks and cars, as well as ecological enhancement of the area's perimeter with high-trunk trees.
**Strengthening for the Region**
About 30 jobs will be relocated to Pieterlen with the new build. Thus, Transstahl not only strengthens its logistical base in Western Switzerland but also brings additional value creation to the community. The groundbreaking symbolises progress, responsibility, and Transstahl's commitment to mobilising its customers and employees across Switzerland — in the truest sense of the word.
