With more than 4 million inhabitants, New Taipei is the largest city in Taiwan. The urban space is also evident on the construction site where Tung Feng is building slurry walls. Due to the limited space, they rely on Liebherr machines, which impress with their compact size as well as performance and precision.
Using the LBX 600 carrier machine for slurry wall work, developed specially for the demands of urban sites, Tung Feng initially removes the loose soil. The machine is equipped with the HSG 5-18 hydraulic slurry wall grab from Liebherr. Upon reaching the deeper areas of rock and sandstone with higher compressive strength, Tung Feng switches from the compact LBX 600 to the HS 8130.1 duty cycle crawler crane with the LSC 8-18 slurry wall cutter. This cutter efficiently penetrates the hard soil layers without elaborate pre-drilling, reducing time, significantly increasing productivity, and allowing a clean material removal on the cramped site. With the Liebherr cutter, Tung Feng progresses an average of 4 meters per hour, with the finished slurry walls reaching a depth of 30 to 55 meters and a thickness of 800 to 1,500 millimeters. Additionally, barrettes are created as individual elements for deep foundation within the construction field.
For Urban Requirements: Modular Design
The LBX 600 and the HS 8130.1 are easily combinable in use as well as for operators, as the control is managed via the same cab concept with identical joysticks and monitors. This allows easy switching between devices and productive work, making it easier for companies to find suitable staff. The LBX 600, the slurry wall grab, and the cutter have a modular design, making them particularly flexible for use in densely built-up regions.
The LBX 600 can be equipped with three different booms and adapted to site requirements. The standard version of the device has a total height of 17.8 meters. For operations with limited height, for example under bridges, it can function as a Low Head with 11 meters or as an Ultra Low Head with 5.8 meters. The hydraulic slurry wall grab consists of an extremely robust base body, which can be extended with a module if needed. The higher weight and lower center of gravity achieve even better verticality, which is beneficial for larger dimensions of the slurry wall. Liebherr has transferred the same concept to the slurry wall cutter. Tung Feng utilizes the standard version of the LBX 600, the short version of the grab, and the long version of the cutter. The slurry wall works were completed in approximately 10 months, finishing in January 2026.
With Liebherr equipment, Tung Feng has found an efficient solution to successfully execute slurry wall works in New Taipei. "The performance of the cutter met and even exceeded our expectations. Our operators report comfortable control and easy handling. The machines are reliable, efficient, and very precise—all within the tightest space constraints. Additionally, Liebherr's rapid service response strengthens operational reliability and facilitates operations," says Ke-Chiang Wu, Project Manager at Tung Feng.
