Winterhilfe Switzerland

Winterhilfe Switzerland was founded in the context of the economic crisis of the 1930s. The consequences of this world economic crisis reached their peak in Switzerland in the winter of 1935/36, with over 100,000 people unemployed.

This economically dramatic situation led the federal government to expand the already existing unemployment insurance. However, the benefits of the fund were not regulated nationwide but were handled regionally, sometimes even at the municipal level with significant differences.

The financial hardship was particularly noticeable during the winter months when additional expenses for heating materials, sturdy shoes, winter clothing, or more expensive vegetables and fruit arose. For the affected people, it was truly about survival: the risk of freezing or starving was great, and people could suffer lasting damage from inadequate nutrition.

Federal, cantonal, and welfare officials agreed that a 'comprehensive action to support the victims of the economic crisis' was urgently needed.
