17.11.2025, Angestellte Schweiz expresses relief over the reduction of US import tariffs from the previous 39 percent. The decision provides tangible relief for the export-oriented industry and improves the prospects for thousands of jobs in Switzerland.

The tariffs introduced in the summer have burdened the industry in a short time - with higher costs, a decline in orders, and growing uncertainty. The recent reduction is an important signal for stability and planning security in companies.

With the tariff reduction, the Swiss industry regains ground in international competition. This benefits not only businesses but also employees along the entire value chain.

New Reality in Global Trade

On the other hand, the development shows that Switzerland is increasingly moving in a new reality. While other countries benefited from tariff deals earlier, the relief for Switzerland came late - and apparently thanks to the direct engagement of business representatives, rather than through political negotiations.

This highlights that as a small, open economic location, we must actively represent our own interests even more in the future. "If trade advantages can only be bought by promises of investments abroad, there is a risk that value creation and jobs will gradually migrate," says Laure Fasel, media spokesperson for Angestellte Schweiz.

Outlook

The tariff reduction is thus an important but ambivalent step: It brings short-term relief but also reveals structural weaknesses.

Angestellte Schweiz calls for Switzerland to align its location policy and foreign economic strategy in such a way that employment, innovation, and industrial strength remain secured in the country in the long term.

"Only if business and politics act together can Switzerland maintain its industrial base and continue to exist in an increasingly geopolitically influenced environment," emphasizes Fasel.
