Zürich Tourism, Coop City St. Annahof, and the Zurich Transport Authority VBZ are continuing the Märlitram as part of a long-term partnership. This ensures it remains a beloved Zurich tradition. After many years of successful operation during the Advent season, the partners have strategically developed the offering further, opening a new chapter with the spring edition.
The Märlitram in Spring Attire
Appropriate for the season, the 'Züri Märlitram' presents itself in a fresh spring look: colorful and intentionally designed in green. What initially seems unusual in the Zurich cityscape sends a clear message: The 'Züri Märlitram' is unique and perfectly attuned to spring.
Thematically, the 'Züri Märlitram' is tied to Sechseläuten, the traditional Zurich spring festival. Inside the tram, children will find three specially written stories that are age-appropriate and contemporary, telling of Zurich's customs, the Böögg, and the guest canton. Narrated by storytellers in traditional Zurich costume, they take young passengers on an atmospheric journey through local traditions. In spring, the Böögg takes on the role that the Samichlaus plays during Advent - personally driving the tram. The implementation of the 'Züri Märlitram' is carried out in close collaboration with the Central Committee of the Zurich Guilds (ZZZ).
Tradition, Experience, and Partnership for Zurich
City Councillor Michael Baumer, Head of Zurich's Industrial Enterprises, is pleased that Zurich's traditions can be experienced: 'The Märlitram and Sechseläuten are as much a part of Zurich as the Böögg is of spring. As Zurich's public transport minister and a guild member, I am especially pleased that these beautiful traditions travel together with the spring tram, providing children and families with a wonderful experience on public transport.'
Thomas Wüthrich, Director of Zurich Tourism, emphasizes the importance of the project: 'With the spring Märlitram, we expand our family offerings and bolster Zurich as a versatile destination for both young and old. At the same time, we make local traditions accessible to both guests and locals, creating a bridge between visitors and the Zurich population.'
Michael Susta, Head of Coop City, highlights the collaborative partnership: 'The 'Züri Märlitram' shows what is possible when strong partners come together to create something for the city of Zurich. We are very pleased to help shape this cross-generational experience and thus contribute to a vibrant Zurich.'
The Oldest Tram on Zurich's Tracks
Built in 1913, the tram has been delighting children since 1958, journeying on a circular route through Zurich's city center as the Märlitram. This makes it the oldest tram running through Zurich's streets. During the 20-minute journey, the iconic tram runs from Bellevue via Limmatquai and Central, over Bahnhofstrasse, back to Bellevue.
Ticket Sales Start on March 3 at 3:00 PM
The Märlitram will travel through the city center from March 20 to April 26, 2026. Tickets cost 12 Swiss francs per child and are available exclusively online from today at 3:00 PM. They can be picked up from March 9, 2026, at one of four Coop City sales points in Zurich (St. Annahof, Bellevue, Sihlcity, Oerlikon) or the Tourist Information at the main station, up to two hours before departure.
