“Statistics unequivocally show: In the winter months, pedestrians are involved in accidents much more frequently,” explains Michael Rytz, Traffic Safety Project Manager at VCS. Especially in the evening hours, increased attention from motorists and proactive driving is necessary.
Due to restricted visibility conditions, the VCS urges all motor vehicle drivers to adjust their speed according to the conditions and to drive especially proactively. “Compared to a car, pedestrians and cyclists are significantly smaller and less conspicuous. Slowing down gives drivers more time to recognize and react to other road users in a timely manner,” Rytz continues.
Special caution towards school children is necessary. School children are often not yet accustomed to traffic and are harder to detect in the dusk due to their height, says Rytz: “Special caution is required when school children are on the move: stopping completely before a child crosses the street is essential. When overtaking children on bikes, maintaining a minimum distance of 1.5 meters is also crucial.”
Every pedestrian can also contribute to their own safety. Wearing bright and reflective clothing and using light reflectors make you more visible in traffic – an advantage at dusk and at night that also helps to prevent accidents.
