01.07.2026, The VCS Verkehrs-Club der Schweiz supports the referendum against the nuclear law. From the VCS's perspective, new nuclear power plants are an expensive and inefficient detour, delaying the urgently needed energy transition and hindering the expansion of renewables – the central prerequisite for the transport transition.

“The VCS advocates for climate-friendly mobility that relies neither on fossil fuels nor nuclear power,” says VCS Managing Director Stéphanie Penher. “The electrification of transport requires a clean, reliable, and affordable energy supply from renewable sources.”

Therefore, from the VCS’s perspective, lifting the ban on building nuclear power plants is not acceptable. This was democratically decided as part of the balanced Energy Strategy 2017. Questioning it now is neither necessary nor effective. New nuclear builds would bind enormous financial resources for decades, which are needed for the rapid expansion of renewable energies and efficiency measures.

For the VCS, it's clear: A climate-compatible and safe energy future can only be achieved with renewable energies, more efficiency, and a consistent transport transition. The nuclear law, as desired by the parliament, sets the wrong incentives here. Hence, the VCS is engaged in the alliance “No to New Nuclear Power Plants” and supports the referendum officially launched today.
