04.03.2026, Not only humans react sensitively to the increasingly early pollen season. Dogs and cats can also develop pollen allergies. Itching, skin irritations, or watery eyes and nose are among the most common signs but often go unnoticed. The global animal welfare organization FOUR PAWS therefore calls for special attention and informs pet owners about typical symptoms and appropriate measures.

Among the most common allergens are pollens from trees, shrubs, herbs, and grasses. If a pet shows breathing difficulties, increased itching, or other persistent issues in spring, a pollen allergy might be the cause. If left untreated, chronic skin inflammations can develop. Affected animals are stressed, sleep poorly, and their quality of life decreases significantly. Even indoor cats are not protected, as pollen can easily enter homes through open windows or on clothing.

Dogs often show clearer symptoms

In dogs, complaints often appear on the paws, snout, ears, around the eyes, in the groin, under the armpits, on the limbs, and the belly. Typical signs include repeated scratching, intense paw licking, reddened or moist skin, and increased hair loss. A strong odor from the ears, hives, frequent head shaking, watery eyes, or the so-called reverse sneezing, where the dog inhales sharply and repeatedly instead of exhaling, can also occur.

FOUR PAWS recommends adjusting daily routines during pollen season. Before walks, the current pollen load should be checked, as it is particularly high in the morning and at noon.

Janine Cirini, Pet Campaigner at FOUR PAWS Switzerland, explains: "During peak times, walks should be kept short. After walks, it's worth cleaning paws and fur with a damp cloth. Wind spreads pollen extensively, while rain binds them. It is therefore important to choose the right time for walks." At home, regular brushing, cleaning of paws and pads, and frequent washing of baskets, blankets, and other textiles help. Changing clothes after being outside also reduces the introduction of pollen into the home. Installing pollen protection screens on windows, frequent cleaning of surfaces, or using an air purifier with a HEPA filter can further reduce the load.

Cats show more subtle signs

In cats, a pollen allergy often manifests as severe itching. The animals scratch or groom themselves excessively, which can lead to small wounds that may become infected. Repeated sneezing, nasal discharge, and red and watery eyes can also occur. In rarer cases, ear infections or breathing difficulties are possible.

Observe and act early

"Many pet owners do not immediately think of a pollen allergy when it comes to skin problems. If a dog or cat shows itching over a longer period, veterinary consultation is important. The earlier an allergy is detected, the better the animal's daily life can be adjusted, and the lower the risk of secondary diseases," says Janine Cirini.

With the start of spring, attention remains crucial. Those who take the first signs seriously and make slight adjustments to daily life can significantly improve their pet's well-being.

FOUR PAWS - Foundation for Animal Welfare

FOUR PAWS is the global animal welfare organization for animals under direct human influence, recognizing grievances, rescuing animals in distress, and protecting them. Founded in 1988 by Heli Dungler and friends in Vienna, the organization advocates for a world where people treat animals with respect, compassion, and understanding. Their sustainable campaigns and projects focus on stray dogs and cats, as well as companion, farm, and wild animals – such as bears, big cats, and orangutans – from inappropriate husbandry and disaster and conflict zones.

With offices in Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Great Britain, Kosovo, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, South Africa, Thailand, Ukraine, the USA, and Vietnam, as well as sanctuaries for animals in need in eleven countries, FOUR PAWS provides rapid help and long-term solutions. In Switzerland, the animal welfare foundation is a cooperative partner of Arosa Bear Land, the first bear sanctuary providing a species-appropriate home for rescued bears from poor captivity conditions.
