18.02.2026, Switzerland boasts one of the highest densities of fuel stations in Europe. Accordingly, there is little movement in the largely saturated market - as shown by the current fuel station statistics from Avenergy. The number of branded fuel stations increased slightly last year from 3313 to 3321. However, the number of stations with at least one fast-charging station increased significantly again, from 233 to 322.

The high fuel station density is a result of the highly saturated market: demand for fuel is well met by the supply of stations, competition is high, and consequently, few new stations are established in Switzerland. The market survey conducted annually by Avenergy Suisse recorded a total of 3321 branded fuel stations across Switzerland as of January 1, 2026, an increase of 8 locations. This does not mean the absolute number of fuel stations has changed. Instead, the change is more a sign of individual stations changing ownership, with independent stations being acquired by established brand companies. Shifts between providers can also be explained by operator changes. Conclusion: the absolute number of fuel stations in Switzerland has been stable for years, though there are continual shifts between market participants.

In 2025, the number of stations with a shop also increased slightly, by 7 locations, to 1393. Looking at the overall market, the participants can clearly be divided into two groups by size: 12 fuel station operators run significantly more than 100 stations, while 8 market participants operate fewer than 50 stations. Of the 20 branded station operators, only three do not run fuel station shops.

38% More Fast Charging Stations Than the Previous Year

Once again, a significant increase is observed in charging options for electric vehicles: the number of stations offering at least one fast-charging station rose by 38% in 2025, from 233 to 322. This comes after the rate had already risen by 43% the previous year. 'We are very pleased with the rapid growth in fast-charging stations. The remarkable number shows that the oil industry is contributing to the energy transition in the field of electromobility infrastructure as well. It is definitely not the Swiss fuel station market that is hindering the growth of electric vehicle sales as hoped,' says Roland Bilang, Managing Director of Avenergy Suisse.

Petrol and Diesel Clearly Dominating the Market

The number of highway fuel stations decreased by two units, from 65 to 63. This decrease is due to construction work - the stations have not disappeared but are being rebuilt. Unsurprisingly, these 63 highway fuel stations record the highest fuel sales, with an average of about 2.3 million litres, the same as the previous year. Overall, the average fuel sales per station remained stable compared to previous years, at around 1.2 million litres, albeit with a slight downward trend. The annual fuel station statistics from Avenergy Suisse in 2026 also show that established fuels like petrol and diesel are dominating the market and will remain so for years to come.
