‘The National Council must absolutely abandon the wrong turn charted by the Council of States,’ says VCS Co-President Jelena Filipovic. ‘Switzerland needs investments in renewable energies, efficiency, and an intelligent energy system now, rather than new nuclear power plants – built from misconceptions, financed on credit, and operated with risk.’
Especially with regard to the ecological transformation of transport, the decision is of great importance. The VCS advocates for climate-friendly mobility that does not rely on fossil fuels or nuclear power. Where traffic cannot be reduced, it should be better organized and consistently shifted to environmentally friendly transport modes, electrification of vehicles is a lever. However, this requires reliable electricity from renewable sources, combined with energy efficiency and an extensive network expansion.
Energy transition and traffic transformation go hand in hand.
‘Those who repeal the nuclear power plant ban today are investing in a technology that was already too expensive yesterday and will be too late tomorrow. This prevents the very thing that the energy transition urgently needs: planning security,’ Filipovic continues.
It can be assumed that new nuclear power plants could contribute to supply at the earliest by 2050. By then, however, traffic must long be electrified and reduced, as the population has decided with the climate protection law.
