26.02.2026, From 1 March 2026, Prof. Dr. Christian Fankhauser will assume leadership of the Urology Clinic at Kantonsspital Winterthur (KSW). He joins from the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital, where he served as Senior Physician in Urology. Christian Fankhauser succeeds Prof. Dr. Hubert John, who led the Urology department at KSW for more than 16 years.


Prof. Dr. Christian Fankhauser is moving from the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital to KSW, where he recently worked as Senior Physician in Urology. Additionally, he is a Professor at the University of Lucerne and Vice President of the Swiss Cancer Institute's (formerly SAKK) Uro-oncology Section. Christian Fankhauser has extensive experience in robotic and open surgery. After completing his studies and doctorate at the University of Zurich, his career took him to KSW, University Hospital Zürich, and Clara Hospital Basel, among others. He deepened his specialization in uro-oncology during a fellowship at Christie Hospital in Manchester and the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. Furthermore, Christian Fankhauser holds the European Robotic Surgeon Certification (ERUS) and the FMH specialization title in operative urology. 'With his proven expertise in complex robotic and open surgery, Christian Fankhauser brings essential skills for the continued development of Urology at KSW,' says Prof. Dr. Stefan Breitenstein, CMO of KSW.

Christian Fankhauser succeeds Prof. Dr. Hubert John, who led the Urology Clinic as Chief Physician for over 16 years and significantly developed it further. He leaves KSW as part of his retirement. Hubert John was pivotal in advancing the introduction of robotic surgical techniques in Urology. 'We thank Hubert John for his extraordinary commitment and outstanding achievements for our Urology,' says Stefan Breitenstein.

The Urology Clinic at KSW has a regional reputation as a highly modern specialty clinic. Each year, the interdisciplinary team treats over 13,000 outpatients and around 2,600 inpatients. Specialists employ state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including robotic surgery. The Urology Clinic actively participates in the development and introduction of new techniques and methods, benefiting patients. The Urology department is also nationally and internationally networked in clinical research.
