In the new edition of "The 150 Best Hotels in Switzerland 2026/27" in the "Andrin Willi Hotel Rating Switzerland," the establishment of the Burgergemeinde Zermatt improves from last year's rank 26 to rank 15. The editorial team acknowledges, among other things, the new spa area Vita Borni, the culinary performance at Prato Borni under Stefan Lünse, and the hallmark of General Manager Markus Marti. The rating was introduced at yesterday's launch event at The Dolder Grand in Zurich.
The Grand Hotel Zermatterhof is among the most significant climbers in the new Swiss hotel rating. At yesterday's launch event at The Dolder Grand in Zurich, Andrin Willi and his editorial team presented the now 30th edition of "The 150 Best Hotels in Switzerland." The traditional establishment of the Burgergemeinde Zermatt jumps from last year’s rank 26 to rank 15 among the best 5-star holiday hotels in Switzerland. The guide is published by Weber Verlag in Thun, with a media partnership with "NZZ am Sonntag," where the rating also appears as a supplemental publication. It is considered the most traditional and prestigious hotel rating in the country.
The editorial team describes the hotel as a traditional establishment that "scores with a crystal-clear view of the Matterhorn." Even the start of a stay becomes an image: "The transfer from the train station remains unforgettable thanks to the double-horse-drawn, blue Lipizzaner carriage." Under General Manager Markus Marti, the rating continues, the Grand Hotel has "noticeably gained momentum." Mentioned are the Belle Epoque dome hall with live piano music during breakfast and the kitchen brigade at Prato Borni, which "under Stefan Lünse, confidently defends its Michelin star and the GaultMillau points." Particularly highlighted is the new wellness area Vita Borni, realized in a multimillion investment and, according to the rating, "currently the most modern in town." Also, the new large stainless steel swimming pool, indoor and outdoor Jacuzzi, and the newly designed garden lounging area contribute to the evaluation. The lounge terrace is described by the editorial team as "probably the most popular outdoor location in the village center. Perfect for seeing and being seen."
Culinary Diversity
Three restaurants are open to guests, including the Michelin and GaultMillau-awarded Alpine
Gourmet Prato Borni, the Brasserie Lusi, and Saycheese!. The spa covers 650 square meters and
collaborates with Cellcosmet and the exclusive products of Matterhorn Swiss Mineral Cosmetics by
Alpeor and Niance. The investment year 2025/26 accounts for 8 million Swiss Francs, including a
new outdoor whirlpool with a view of the Matterhorn, as well as additional resources for staff
accommodations, rooms, and kitchen. Markus Marti, General Manager of the Grand Hotel
Zermatterhof: "The jump by eleven ranks is a recognition for the entire team. We consistently invest in
what our guests feel - in the substance of the house, in our kitchen, in the new wellness area Vita
Borni, and especially in the people who live hospitality here every day. We are very pleased that the
most prestigious Swiss hotel rating honors us with rank 15, and it is at the same time a mandate."
The ranking appears in 2026 for the 30th time and for the second time under the direction of Andrin Willi. A multi-member editorial team stands behind the work, visiting, evaluating, and describing the hotels according to uniform criteria. The basis is journalistic research, the classification of HotellerieSuisse, and structured guest impressions. The book is published by Weber Verlag in Thun, and "NZZ am Sonntag" serves as the media partner. The current edition "The 150 Best Hotels in Switzerland 2026/27" comprises 440 pages and is available in bookstores at a price of 59 Swiss Francs (ISBN 978-3-03818-870-4).
