Six Months After the Earthquake in Myanmar / Caritas Switzerland Expands Aid in Myanmar

25.09.2025, Six months after the earthquake on March 28, the humanitarian situation in Myanmar remains precarious. Caritas Switzerland continues to provide emergency assistance to particularly vulnerable population groups. They are now also supporting reconstruction efforts, such as providing training in the construction industry.
During the earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 in the spring of 2025, more than 5,400 people lost their lives and thousands were injured. Over two million people lost their homes, livelihoods, as well as access to clean water, food, and medical care.
Since July, intense monsoon rains have worsened infrastructure damage and made it difficult to access remote areas. Approximately 3.6 million people have also been displaced due to the ongoing conflict between the military and various armed groups.
Caritas Switzerland and its local and international partners have provided essential relief supplies over the past six months, including materials for emergency shelters, food, water, and hygiene products. Additionally, Caritas and its partners are providing cash assistance to allow affected individuals to acquire what they need most urgently. Safe spaces with psychosocial support have been set up for children.
Over 15,000 people have already been assisted
In this initial phase of emergency relief, Caritas Switzerland's partner organizations were able to support around 15,000 people. This basic support continues, as the need in Myanmar remains great.
"Many people lost everything in the earthquake - especially the poorest continue to suffer from the aftermath of the disaster," says Sarah Buss, Head of Disaster Relief at Caritas Switzerland. "Now, it is crucial to support the population in rebuilding and simultaneously better protect them against recurring floods."
In an upcoming second phase, Caritas Switzerland plans to support around 7,500 particularly vulnerable people. They will receive access to clean water and sanitation facilities as well as financial aid. Additionally, men and women can complete further training in the construction sector to rebuild destroyed buildings. To better protect communities from floods, local early warning systems will be introduced collaboratively.
