The traditional Swiss company Schurter is cutting a third of its jobs at the Lucerne site. Angestellte Schweiz views the announced job cuts at Schurter with great concern. The case of Schurter is part of a worrying series of relocation decisions that are gradually eroding Switzerland as an industrial hub.
From the perspective of the employees' association, a pattern has emerged over the past few months: Traditional companies are relocating their production sites abroad, particularly to Eastern Europe and Asia. In Switzerland, initial series and a focus on high-quality innovations remain.
"Switzerland is losing important expertise and its industrial base as a result," says Pierre Derivaz, lawyer at Angestellte Schweiz. "In the land of dual vocational training, we should particularly ensure the maintenance of production know-how, not just engineering skills."
Socially Responsible Solutions
Angestellte Schweiz demands a serious examination of alternatives to layoffs from the traditional company Schurter. Socially responsible solutions must be found for the employees, who are often long-serving. Where job cuts are unavoidable, offers for further education and retraining must be provided. Socially responsible solutions are crucial to minimise the impact of layoffs and to provide perspectives for the affected employees.
"We expect the management to take responsibility for the employees and also for the region," says Pierre Derivaz.
